Del cálculo numérico a la creatividad abierta

 

• The exhibition analyses the evolution of the creative processes in music, architecture, linguistics and art since the arrival of the first computer to Spain in 1966. It was an IBM 7090 in Madrid University which they shared with other Spanish universities.
• The exhibition will begin September 19^th in the Exhibition Hall at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office (at 8pm, free entrance). It will remain open to the public until December 18^th.

The Museum of Computing of the ETSINF takes part in the “From the numeric calculus to open creativity. The Calculus Center in the University of Madrid (1965-1982)”, exhibition. It has been organized by the Universitat Politècnica de València in its Cultural Activities Area, through the transfer of two pieces from the 60s.

The exhibition will take place at the Exhibition Hall UPV (rector’s office, ground floor) from September 19^th to December 18^th 2013. It is organised by Aramis López and the exhibition analyses the evolution of the creative processes in music, architecture, linguistics and art since the arrival of the first computer to Spain in 1966. In this way, the result of the agreement between IBM and the University of Madrid (nowadays, The Complutense University of Madrid), the latter received one IBM 7090 with an auxiliary computer, one IBM 1410 and it was on the cutting edge of science and technology with the formation of the Calculus Center of the University of Madrid (CCUM).

The samples given by the Museum of Computing of ETSINF are a keypunch and a huge magnetic tape unit. Both elements were key pieces for the processing and production of information and they were regular in the installations of that time as well. Only specialized staff was able to work with these huge equipment. What it is particular of the exhibition is that the auxiliary computer IBM 1410 was put to the service for the artistic creation, promoting and facilitating creative tasks and the automatic making of plastic forms.

The Museum of Computing of ETSINF is the home of other pieces from the same time. It should be noted that the museum has been recognized as a museum from the Valencian Community. Since its funding, the museum has increased its funds thanks to donations from both public and private institutions. It offers an interesting tour through the last decades of the history of computing and numerous educational activities are performed.
